Bongani attained his BProc and LLB degrees from the University of South Africa and in 2005 commenced articles with a local law firm, ultimately heading up their Labour Department. He joined Garlicke & Bousfield in 2011 as a Director in the Employment Law Department and after serving on the Executive Committee for some time was elected as the firm’s Chief Executive Officer. Bongani served as CEO from 2016 until 2021 and is currently the firm’s Chairman. Bongani acted as a judge of the Labour Court in 2014, 2015 and 2019. He is an avid chess player and has several trophies to his name, including being a champion of Durban Chess Club on 3 occasions.
